Privacy and measurement

Optional audience measurement is used only with browser consent.

When enabled, events record page paths, article IDs, placements and article formats, visible impressions and clicks, searches and empty results (never search terms), and reaching the end of the body after 15 seconds. These are proxies, not evidence of understanding. Names, email addresses, free-form input, URL query strings, full referrer URLs and IP addresses are not stored in analytics events.

With consent, a random browser identifier is stored locally for 28 days. Analytics events are retained for 30 days. Readers using other devices or declining consent are not all represented in the measurements. Scroll depth is not proof of understanding.

This is separate from access information processed by the hosting provider for delivery and security.

Correction reports are separate from analytics: the article, report text, receipt time and source recheck outcome are stored privately for 30 days. Do not submit personal or confidential information. Reports are not republished as articles.
